The Lumineers - Ho Hey
As I mentioned yesterday, we saw The Lumineers at Hotel Cafe this weekend. The show was a blast. They draw heavily on country and bluegrass to make straight up roots rock goodness. Lots of fun.
Y La Bamba - Hughson Boys (The Sights of Sounds session)
We saw Y La Bamba open for The Lumineers at Hotel Cafe last night and they were awesome. Lead singer and guitar player Luz Elena Mendoza is impossible to deny. She’s about 6 feet tall, covered in ink, has striking salt & pepper hair, and sings in an otherworldly voice most easily compared to Joanna Newsom or Laura Gibson. But I was most impressed by Paul Cameron on classical guitar. He rips, and nails the perfect punk rock choirboy persona. Lots to love about this band from Portland.
Listen to their recent album, Court The Storm, produced by Steve Berlin, featuring Neko Case. Also see their TIny Desk Concert at NPR to get a great sense for their live show. Highly recommend.

Does anyone else have this problem with Tumblr video on Chrome? When a video post appears in my dashboard, this fuzzy frame appears in the browser’s upper left corner. I don’t think I’ve seen it on any other sites.
UPDATE: Don’t know what I was thinking. I definitely see it on other sites.
Hold that thought. I just discovered the Balmorhea Take Away Shows. This is Bowsprit. Purely sublime. (Is that redundant?) Don’t miss the other two episodes: Remembrance and Night Squall. Man, I am just floating away with these guys this morning.
