Marc Ribot & My Brightest Diamond - Bird On A Wire (Leonard Cohen cover)
We saw My Brightest Diamond at The Troubadour last night. What a treat. As Rebecca observed on our way out, “you love a performance” - and I do! I see a lot of shows, so sometimes the figures standing on stage, earnestly strumming guitars, blend together. Shara Worden, on the other hand, is remarkable. She took the stage in a mask and homemade costume, danced, told stories, played guitar, keys, autoharp, ukelele and… an instrument I don’t know. And of course she sang. Shara Worden’s voice is one of my favorite in music and she was just smashing last night.
Because it’s Friday, here’s a cover of My Brightest Diamond and NY-based guitar wizard Marc Ribot playing Leonard Cohen. This is another from MOJO’s great Leonard Cohen Covered tribute.

Bill Callahan - So Long Marianne (Leonard Cohen cover)
The latest issue of MOJO Magazine celebrates Leonard Cohen. It includes a tribute CD of Leonard Cohen covers, including this gem from Bill Callahan. It doesn’t get much better than this. This is like the perfect storm of songwriting, melody and vocals. Just perfect.

Leonard Cohen - Darkness
This is the second new track from the forthcoming album that Leonard Cohen has released. Like organ? You’re in luck. Listen also to Show Me The Place.

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne
Getting back to basics with a Leonard Cohen classic today. This tune stops me in my tracks. Devastatingly beautiful.
I don’t know how it’s taken me this long to get around to this obvious openers post: Suzanne, the opening track from Leonard Cohen’s first album (1967’s Songs of Leonard Cohen). A beautiful song that sets you up for the album to follow—and for the rest of Cohen’s recorded output, for that matter.
Many of you following this blog are probably familiar with Leonard Cohen, but for those who aren’t: yes, this song (and Cohen’s music in general) have a little bit of the Simon & Garfunkel sweet melancholy sound to them.
There is a difference, however. S&G’s bittersweet songs are the memories of hard times and love lost called up with a glass of wine, sitting in your comfortable suburban living room. Cohen’s songs are memories of hard times and love lost called up with a bottle of whatever’s cheap at the liquor store as you sit alone in your pay-by-the-week hotel room.
Just so you know. In case you find yourself suddenly brooding and misanthropic…
