PHOSPHORESCENT / ALBERTA CROSS

Brooklyn-by-way-of-Georgia artist Matthew Houck has been recording under the working name of Phosphorescent since 2003, experimenting within the wide-open boundaries of modern folk and garnering comparisons to artists from Will Oldham to Bob Dylan along the way. Phosphorescent’s most recent album, To Willie, is a collection of Willie Nelson covers that blends gospel, country, and folk, revealing a surprising layer of vulnerability to Nelson’s work. The record earned Phosphorescent a personal invitation from Willie Nelson to play the 2009 edition of his famous Farm Aid benefit concert in October just a few days ago!

But don’t get it wrong and pigeonhole him. Houck isn’t just playing reflective folk/country music. He beats the heck out of so many who seem to only want to become the new Dan Fogelberg . His songs are just frayed and weird enough to get away from the often stagnant genre. Tambourines stretch out towards the end of one song, while intercutting wordless harmonies, and soft yelps flesh out the arrangements further. His fondness for his own harmony overdubs partially explains why he’s received mentions from the Animal Collective fan base in its various incarnations, but Houck has his own spin on a deeper and more reflective approach that sometimes suggests early Spiritualized circa “Feel So Sad.” His arrangements at their lushest are beautifully ragged, a mélange of psych/Americana that don’t suggest one era or group of performers as much as a careful mishmash of them all…..
