Elephant Revival - Quill Pen Feather (Live at Folk Alliance 2012)

This tune caught my ear as I was catching up on folk happenings this morning. Elephant Revival is an “indie acoustic quintet” based in Nederland, Colorado. They’ve released two albums and I think they have a third on the way. Quill Pen Feather is a brand new tune.

PS. Give it a few seconds to get going. I caught some silence at the start.

Listen to this! We just teamed up with Spotify so you can post tracks, playlists, and full albums from their very extensive library. Search for tracks or paste a Spotify link to embed your music — without the daily limit. :)

To celebrate, we’ve put together this playlist featuring musicians from theTumblr Spotlight. Hit play and enjoy!

Don’t have Spotify yet? Get it here!

This is cool because it makes the entire Spotify catalog sharable. But:

1. I’m not sure I want to force my visitors to download and signup for Spotify.
2. The tracks aren’t aggregated by exfm! That totally mucks with the way I interact with Tumblr.

Trampled By Turtles - Alone

It’s another big week for new music. M Ward, Alabama Shakes, Amadou & Miriam, Flo & the Machine, Bonnie Raitt… and this Minnesota bluegrass 5-piece all have new albums dropping tomorrow. This single appears on their brand new album, Stars and Satellites. Good stuff.

Muddy Waters - Howlin’ Wolf

I’m reading the Keith Richards autobiography. I guess I didn’t know how heavily the Stones were influenced by R&B. Muddy Waters was one of Keith’s early heroes, and he went to great lengths to get his hands on these records.

It’s crazy that I barely remember a time at which anything I wanted to hear wasn’t at my fingertips — and that high school kids never experienced that scarcity at all. Think the increased accessibility will result in better musicians? I’m not so sure…

Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny - Dodecahedron

BJH & The Hooves of Destiny’s recent album, Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose, is the perfect storm of weirdness, anthemic pop, and nonsense. She combines operatic vocals with acoustic guitar, samples, keyboards, ukelele, glockenspiel, crazy wigs, wacky outfits, and more. The result is not to be missed.

Bonnie Raitt - Million Miles

Bob Dylan released this song in ‘97 on Time Out of Mind. Dylan may be one of the world’s best living songwriters and storytellers, but Bonnie Raitt gives him a run for his money in both departments. She and her band, including guitar legend Bill Frisell, absolutely kill it on this deep dark blues cover of Dylan’s original. Bonnie jokes that she’s not getting older, she’s getting better. I think she’s right.

Larkin Grimm - The Road Is Paved With Leaves (WNYC Spinning On Air Session)

Fun facts about Larkin Grimm:

1. She’s on Michael Gira’s Young God Records. (UPDATE: She was on Young God Records. Soul Retrieval was released on her own Bad Bitch Records label.) He’s quoted as saying:

Larkin is a magic woman. She lives in the mountains in north Georgia. She collects bones, smooth stones, and she casts spells. She worships the moon. She is very beautiful, and her voice is like the passionate cry of a beast heard echoing across the mountains just after a tremendous thunder storm, when the air is alive with electricity. I don’t consider her folk though - she is pre-folk, even pre-music. She is the sound of the eternal mother and the wrath of all women. She goes barefoot everywhere, and her feet are leathery and filthy. She wears jewels, glitter, and glistening insects in her hair.

(Hat tip newspeedwayboogie on the quote.)

2.  yvynyl introduced us in Philly a few years ago. I don’t know if she really collects bones and casts spells, but I can confirm that she’s a character.

3. I realized the next day that she lived with a friend of mine at Yale. Yep, she’s a Yaley.

4. She was once a member of Dirty Projectors. Weird, right?

This song appears on her recent album, Soul Retrieval. View the rest of this set at www.wnyc.org/shows/spinning/2012/mar/11
