Is my blog theme too busy?
I am realizing that displaying the activity feed on my main page may be a little much. Is it too crazy? If you didn’t know anything about Tumblr and/or FriendFeed, would it be too overwhelming?

Long live the punk cabaret
I just bought a physical copy of Who Killed Amanda Palmer from her website (the click-through leads to Tumblr!). This note came inside the accompanying digital download. I keep liking her more and more.

Dear You, Listener - It’s Amanda. Thank you, so much, for buying this record. If you are downloading this file, it means that you know how to use a computer. If you know how to...

I like it.

Use Case: Music Fan Clubs
Paywall offers an alternative to today’s method of monetizing fan clubs and “insider access.” Paywall allows bands to leverage a realtime publishing platform where artists and band members can send digital content directly into a drop for immediate publishing and delivery to subscribed members. Sample Scenario: The Droponauts have recently kicked off...

WHAT IF THERE IS NO DISCOVERY ALGORITHM? Current music recommendation systems have tons of serious issues: they don’t properly incorporate long tail content, fail in offering anything close to serendipity, and get even more confused by divisive content (see the ratings for Napoleon Dynamite on Amazon for an example). Smart people with good funding have been working to solve all of...
Cory Doctorow Talks Copyright
For those of you who don’t know who Cory Doctorow is, he is a freelance journalist, former director of European affairs for the EFF, a 4x college dropout and founder of an open source cola company. Doctorow makes a living giving away his books and other creative works for free, as well being the co-editor of Boing Boing, and contributing to WIRED, Guardian.co.uk, and Craphound.com. And I bet...
Sharing music with twitter and drop.io
How did I not know about this before? Now following.
pootytang
Ever since drop.io announced their twitter integration I have been trying to figure out how to do something useful with it. I think I have an idea!
I have created a twitter account called “music_drop”. Whenever I create a drop that contains music, I will have the music_drop account notify it’s followers.
OK. Nothing too...

Ada Lovelace Day Celebration
In honor of Ada Lovelace Day 2009, I celebrate Elena Yatzeck, a dear friend and mentor who brought me up in the tech world. Elena hired me into my first software development job out of college. I stuck with her for nearly 7 years, working indirectly and eventually directly for her, through 4 career moves.
She encouraged me to take on bigger challenges, to identify and pursue new opportunities. ...

Is it next year yet?
It’s over now. All the bands have clambered into their vans and schlepped off to wherever they’re playing next. All the marketing folks have run out of free crap to give away. Lance Armstrong has ridden his bike back off to wherever he was going. Some unfortunate and hopefully well-paid Austin residents have scraped the last of the barf off of the 6th Street...
Francis and the Lights form LLC, get 1 million...
Now this is interesting.
NEW YORK, Nov. 3. — Francis Farewell Starlite, frontman of independent band Francis and the Lights, today announced the incorporation of Francis and the Lights, LLC. The move includes a $100,000 investment from The Normative Music Company, giving the new entity a valuation of precisely one million dollars. Via: The Normatist

Eclectic Method - A Rock Mix
Not just a “mashup”—this is a decade-spanning audio-visual megamashup. Sweet, and I think we can expect to see this all over the Internet for the next 72 hours. Just remember that you saw it here before you were tired of it! [via themusic]
RiP: A Remix Manifesto (Trailer)
I saw Brett Gaylord’s documentary on copyright and remix culture at SXSW. The film looks at Girl Talk as a case study, exploring how remix artists like Greg Gillis make original work out of the things around them — something artists have been doing throughout history.
The filmmaker interviews Lawrence Lessig and Cory Doctorow, who raise alarming...

SXSWi Wrap
The Interactive conference was so hectic, I can’t begin to recap every day. Monday and Tuesday were much better than Sunday with some good talks. Monday highlights included the Entrepreneurship in the Belly of the Beast and Making Breakthroughs Happen sessions. Tuesday’s talk with Guy Kawasaki and Chris Anderson was great.
I think I’ll write more about these on the clock tomorrow. ;) ...
SXSWi Sunday Recap
It’s the final day of South by Southwest and I haven’t yet written anything longer than 140 characters about my week here. Before it fades into more of a blur than it’s been from the start, I want to get some of this down on paper. From the top:
I arrived on Sunday for the Interactive conference. On the Super Shuttle to the hotel, I met some nice Silicon Valley guys from Tapulous, Meebo, and...
tUnE-YaRdS - Fiya
I shot this video of Merrill Garbus performing as tUnE-YaRdS at the Asthmatic Kitty showcase, Okay Mountain, Austin, TX on Saturday, March 21. It was such a beautiful day and such a cool venue; I had a perfect spot sitting right in front on the gravel and I couldn’t resist trying to capture some of it. The crowd was attentive and chill. It was about 80 degrees, sunny and...

Twitter Success Story
Something awesome happened on Twitter yesterday. I was at the Do A 360 Deal with Yourself panel with Ian Rogers, Amanda Palmer, John Wesley Harding, and some other industry people. I had been shut down at the Fader Fort earlier in the week because I didn’t RSVP. (Don’t get me started on this. RSVP’s are open to anyone, they accept about 2000… in other words, it’s not...
